Coastal Connections
Somerset House, London (Touring)
Client: World Monuments Fund

Coastal Connections is a joint initiative between World Monuments Fund and English Heritage to build a global network of coastal heritage sites. Sharing knowledge, expertise and solutions to address the common challenges of managing treasured places in diverse and dynamic environments.

Commissioned by the World Monuments Fund, and launching at the London Design Biennale hosted at Somerset House the exhibition focused on seven global sites at risk.

Custodians from each site were asked to submit answers to a series of scripted questions to gain an insight in to the challenges each of them face. Edited in-house and shown on a screen installed in a structure referencing Hurst Castle's walls (the chosen UK site), visitors were invited to interact with the exhibition choosing from seven videos each programmed and accessible by a button press.

Through Athelstan Spilhaus’s oceanographic projection, the immersive floor map encouraged visitors to see the world from a different perspective with the Arctic at it's centre. It serves as a visual testament to the interconnected nature of our global coasts, cultures, and shared heritage.

The exhibition continues to tour most recently appearing at Dover Castle.
